Another PhD at INOSIM: Christian Sonntag

INOSIM has a long tradition in supporting doctoral training – several of our employees have finished their PhD while working for us. Now, another one of our colleagues adds his name to this list: on July 9, 2018, Christian Sonntag, who currently works at INOSIM, successfully defended his PhD thesis with the title “Model Transformations for Complex Systems Engineering” that he prepared under the supervision of Prof. Dr. Sebastian Engell, head of the Process Dynamics and Operations Group (DYN), Dept. of Biochemical and Chemical Engineering (BCI), TU Dortmund.

Before joining INOSIM at the beginning of 2018, Christian held a number of other positions. During his time at the DYN group, he mostly worked on the acquisition, management, and technological execution of large EU-level research, innovation, and strategy projects that, in addition to his project management skills, provided him with experience in modeling and simulation, model-based tool integration, algorithmic model transformation, design flow support, operational excellence, and automation system design, implementation, and validation.

In addition, Christian taught several university-level courses, he supervised more than 20 Master theses, and he gained experience in roadmapping and strategy development in different technology sectors, including Cyber-physical Systems (CPS), Internet of Things (IoT), and Systems of Systems (SoS). He also has years of experience in software development with large IT companies (e.g. Hewlett Packard) and smaller IT providers, He has published more than 45 scientific papers and book chapters, and he (co-)authored three books on software development.

INOSIM Simulation already is an essential tool for solving many process design and optimization tasks. On Christian’s role in our company, Peter Balling, INOSIM CEO, points out: “At INOSIM, Christian is responsible for the development of innovative software solutions and services that will extend our software suite to push simulation beyond its current limits, e.g., in the areas of production scheduling with state-of-the-art optimization and AI technologies, simulation-based online monitoring, prediction, and optimization, advanced visualization and VR/MR solutions, and packaged-goods simulation. We are very happy to have a cross-disciplinary expert like Christian at this crucial position.”
